Cherbourg with booze-cruise.netThough not as popular a destination for booze-cruisers or day-trippers, Cherbourg has a good selection of stores for visitors travelling from Portsmouth and Poole.

Brittany Ferries operate services from Portsmouth (about 3 hours) and Poole (around 5 hours). However, the Poole service stops between 10th November 2005 and 23rd January 2006.

Other Shopping Opportunities

Place de Gaulle:
Cherbourg market days are Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. The market square can be found close to the Theatre.

Cherbourg Old Town:

There are also fish and open-air markets in the heart of the Old Town - La Vielle Ville - a few minutes walk from the waterfront.

Shopping areas:

Just behind the waterfront, in the Old Town, there is a maze of narrow cobbled streets, many of which are pedestrianised. Specialist food and wine shops, café bars, restaurants, fashion boutiques and gift shops abound and make a welcome change from the huge supermarkets.

Department store:

If you are looking for home wear, such as: clothing, accessories, fabrics and haberdashery, glasses, crockery, cutlery, bed and table linen, candles, etc. search out EuroDif, just a few metres from the main square. It is the largest department store in the region.

 


What else is there to do in Cherbourg?

Food lovers will be tempted by the cafes and bars on the Place de Verdun. Whether you are looking for lunch, dinner or just tea or coffee, there is a wide choice.

The Cité de la Mer is a stunning aquarium, located in the restored trans-Atlantic terminal. Visitors can explore an ocean diving area and a former nuclear submarine.

The Fort du Roule provides a fantastic view of the port.The Musée de la Libération, commemorating D-Day and the liberation of Cherbourg in the Second World War can also be found here.

The famous Bayeux Tapestry from the 11th century, depicting the Battle of Hastings can be seen just a short drive from Cherbourg. If you have time, this is a must-see.
